Power the Job Site: Exportable Power, Long Range, and Long Loads with the Sierra EV

The GMC Sierra EV offers up to 10.2 kW of exportable power, up to 478 miles of range, and a Midgate for long loads. See it at Northwest Hills GMC in Torrington, CT.

An electric truck earns its spot on the crew by doing three things: powering your tools, covering real distance, and hauling what the job needs. The 2026 GMC Sierra EV does all three. It runs your tools without a generator, drives far enough on one charge to reach remote sites and get home, and carries material up to 10 feet 10 inches long.

Here is how each of those works on an actual job site, along with the honest caveats that come with the electric part. Every section has one.

Power off the truck: up to 10.2 kW

The Sierra EV's Energy Transfer Pro system delivers up to 10.2 kW of exportable power. That runs real job-site loads straight from the bed: a circular saw, a compressor, a radio, lights, and chargers for cordless batteries, all through built-in 120V and 240V outlets. No portable generator, no generator noise, no fuel can.

A few candid notes before you set your expectations:

  • This is optional equipment, not standard. If exporting power is the reason you are buying, make sure the Energy Transfer Pro system is on the build sheet.

  • There is also a smaller 7.2 kW Energy Transfer system, and sources list that as the version offered on the work-focused Elevation trim. If you need the full 10.2 kW, confirm the specific truck delivers it before you sign.

  • The power comes from the same battery that drives the truck. Run tools all day at a remote site with no charger nearby and you are spending range. Most days that is a non-issue. On far-flung sites with no plug anywhere, do the math first.

Used right, the truck replaces the generator and the extension-cord spaghetti at a site. On a crowded job, that alone wins converts.

Range: up to 478 miles, with the right battery

GMC estimates up to 478 miles of range on the Sierra EV. That number reaches distant job sites and gets you home without a midday charge. But read the fine print, because that figure belongs to the top battery.

Here is how range breaks down:

  • Standard Range: about 283 miles

  • Extended Range: about 410 miles

  • Max Range: GM-estimated up to 478 miles

The 478-mile figure is exclusive to the Max Range battery, offered on the Denali and AT4 trims. The job-focused Elevation comes with the Standard or Extended battery, which puts you at roughly 283 to 410 miles. That is still a serious workday of driving, just not 478. Pick the battery that matches your actual routes.

Two things every work-truck buyer should factor in:

First, cold weather and heavy loads cut range meaningfully. On a Connecticut winter morning with a loaded bed, your real range will sit well below the sticker. That is true of every EV, not just this one. Preconditioning the battery while the truck is still plugged in claws some of it back.

Second, charging is fast where it exists. On an 800-volt DC fast charger, the Sierra EV adds about 100 miles in roughly ten minutes, so a stop along your route costs you a coffee break, not a lunch hour. But if your job sites sit far from any charging, factor that into the decision honestly.

Carry long material: the MultiPro Midgate

The available MultiPro Midgate is what makes this truck genuinely useful for fence, deck, trim, and pipe work. The back wall of the cab folds down, opening the bed into the cabin. Using the Midgate with the load stop function, the folded 60/40 rear seats, and the removable rear glass, you get 10 feet 10 inches of cargo length, enough for 10-foot pipe, conduit, long trim, and full-length boards that would hang off a standard bed.

And you do not have to give up the whole back seat to do it. Because the Midgate splits 60/40, you can fold just one side, run the long material through, and keep a seat open for a crew member.

More places for gear beyond the bed:

  • The standard six-function MultiPro tailgate, which doubles as a step and a work platform

  • The power-opening eTrunk up front: about 11 cubic feet of lockable, weatherproof storage that loads right at the bumper, with its own 120V outlet, tie-downs, and drain holes, the right home for expensive tools you want out of sight

Between the Midgate, the tailgate, and the front trunk, this truck has more distinct places to put gear than any ordinary pickup.

A real day on the job

Picture an installation job 80 miles out. You leave on a full battery with the Midgate's 60 side folded, 10-foot material running from the bed through the cab, and a crew member riding on the 40 side of the split seat. On site, you plug the saw and compressor into the bed outlets and run straight off the truck, with no generator idling in the background. Your good tools sit locked in the eTrunk.

That is the Sierra EV at work. It is a different way of running a job, and for the right crew it is a better one.

Is an EV work truck right for you? The honest version

I will not tell you this works for everyone, because it does not. It works best when:

  • You return most nights to a place where the truck can plug in, at the shop or at home

  • Your daily miles fit the battery you buy, with margin left for winter and loads

  • You would actually use the bed power and the Midgate often enough to justify optioning them

If your work takes you where charging is scarce, if you haul maximum loads every single day, or if you cannot plug in overnight, a gas Sierra 1500 may still be the smarter buy. Know your routes and your charging situation before you spend the money. The wrong truck is expensive no matter what the spec sheet says.

Spec it for your work at Northwest Hills GMC in Torrington

If you run crews in Connecticut, Northwest Hills GMC in Torrington can build a Sierra EV around your actual work. The decisions come down to three things. Pick the battery, Standard, Extended, or Max Range, based on your real daily miles with winter and load margin built in. Add Energy Transfer Pro if running tools off the truck is part of the plan, and confirm the configuration delivers the full 10.2 kW. Add the Midgate if long material is a regular part of the job.

Before you buy, bring your routes and your charging picture, get hands on the bed outlets and the Midgate in person, and take the truck for a real test drive. The right spec turns this from an interesting EV into a working member of the crew.
