Dirt Road, Then Office: The 2026 Terrain AT4 for People Who Live Up a Hill

Many of the people in this area live at the end of a road which the town doesn't plow.

In Goshen the road is a quarter of a mile long and is made of dirt off a paved town road. In Norfolk the area is a driveway which has a slope that the plow driver complains about each winter. Outside Winsted there is a section of gravel that turns to soup for three weeks in March and then hardens into ruts deep enough to lose a hubcap in.

Then, five times a week, you go to an office wearing ordinary clothes.

It is a truly awkward problem, and the majority of compact SUVs deal with about half of it.

What the Terrain AT4 actually is

It is a compact crossover with genuine off-road equipment fitted to it and has its attractive interior preserved. It is not a truck and it isn't a Jeep; it occupies a middle ground, which is about the way most people in Litchfield County actually do live.

Here is what comes standard on the 2026 AT4:

  • Equipped with all-wheel drive, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 175 horsepower and 203 lb-ft of torque.

  • Off-road tuned suspension with a lifted ride height

  • Front skid plate with steel underbody shield, which is the part that matters the day you high-center in a frozen rut

  • 17-inch dark machined aluminum wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires

  • Hill Descent Control

  • Red front recovery hooks and LED fog lamps

  • Up to five selectable drive modes, including the AT4-exclusive Terrain mode

  • A trailering package rated to 1,500 pounds

  • 15-inch touchscreen with Google built-in and an 11-inch digital driver display

  • Heated front seats, heated steering wheel, hands-free power liftgate, and wireless phone charging

  • Three years of OnStar One

  • More than 16 standard safety and driver assistance features

You find Premium cloth and CoreTec seating in Forest Storm with Mahogany accents. , there are five seats, the cargo space measures 63.5 cubic feet when the second row is folded, and the total length is 181 inches, so it will still fit in a one-car garage that was built in 1948.

The drive modes, and the two that matter here

The idea that there are five modes seems a bit like putting out a specification sheet. In Connecticut, though, two of them actually manage to pay for themselves.

Snow and ice affect the way the throttle responds and the way the all-wheel-drive system sends power; you first notice this during the first proper storm of the year, when in the morning your driveway has silently turned into a sledding hill.

The only model to have terrain mode is the AT4; it's designed for low-speed use on loose surfaces, a condition that applies during mud season and not on trails. This is the mode you employ when crawling up your own road in April.

The other ones are what one would normally expect:Normal, Off-Road, Tow/Haul.

The honest part

The AT4 isn't an off-road vehicle; it's a vehicle for use on roads which performs better when the road surface fails.

The increased ground clearance, the all-terrain tires and the skid plate are sufficient for driving on a dirt driveway, a muddy field at the fairgrounds, and for dealing with winter conditions in Connecticut; however, they won't take you up a rock ledge and no aspect of this vehicle suggests that it can do so. If your intention is to drive on real trails, then you should consider the Canyon AT4 or else spend your money somewhere else.

The engine is fairly modest;175 horsepower is adequate as long as you are not expecting quick.  The 203 lb-ft of torque does more than the horsepower figure indicates, since it's the torque that enables you to climb a gradient with four people on board. Nevertheless, no one is going to describe this vehicle as being fast, and I'd prefer to make that clear to you at the outset rather than let you discover it during the test drive.

The towing weight is 1,500 pounds; that would be a small utility trailer, perhaps a couple of dirt bikes or a pile of brush taken during spring cleanup. It does not include a boat. In the case where you are towing two personal watercraft on a double trailer, you should check your actual trailer weight since you are likely to be over the limit.

The fuel economy figures are 24 in the city, 26 on the highway and 25 combined; you do pay a bit for the all-terrain tires, and that is the compromise you're accepting.

Why the 2026 specifically

The 2027 Terrain AT4 is mechanically identical. It has the same 1.5-liter turbo engine, the same 175 hp and 203 lb-ft of torque, the same all-wheel drive system, the same skid plate, the same all-terrain tires, and the same Terrain mode. If you're attempting to work out whether delaying your purchase gives you a better truck, it doesn't.

You do get a reduced standard equipment list. The 2026 AT4 comes with three years of OnStar One as standard. However, on the 2027 model, it is no longer included as standard equipment and becomes an option that you have to pay for separately.

Where to look

Northwest Hills GMC store in Torrington carries the Terrain range. Before you drive down there, you should phone ahead to confirm that an AT4 is available, since this is a model that is frequently moved and you don't want to make the journey for nothing. things to do on the drive.

Look for a dirt track and drive down it. A circular route on a tarmac road gives no information regarding a vehicle whose entire character is determined by what occurs when the tarmac road ends. Since Torrington is surrounded by precisely the kind of roads suitable for this, there is no reason to carry out a test drive that involves only highways. Use the drive modes while you are out. A mode you never learn to use is a feature you did not actually buy.

Inquire in particular about the all-terrain tires. They are the appropriate choice for a driveway full of ruts, but they are noisier and less efficient than highway tires. So, if most of your week is spent on Route 8 or heading down towards I-84, drive them at speed before you sign.

The AT4 is designed for a particular type of person that being someone for whom the driveway is a problem, the commute isn't, and who has no intention of solving the issue by driving a truck.
